Changing The Game Of Women’s Sport In Victoria

A new report from the Allan Labor Government highlights the growing popularity of women’s sports in Victoria, with media coverage increasing by a third over the past year. Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence has released the second The Conversation of Sport report, analyzing nearly 40,000 sports news stories from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

The study reveals that women’s sports accounted for 20% of sports news coverage last year, up from 15% the previous year. Although this marks significant progress, there remains a need for further growth to achieve parity.

Notably, female journalists contributed 34% of news bylines, an increase from 27% the year before. The Change Our Game Women in Sports Media Program has been instrumental in supporting women’s careers in sports media, assisting over 100 women since 2020.
