Marlene Haslam is the mother of dual Olympic Games gold medallist, Juliet Haslam.
Marlene Haslam – mother of SA’s famous Juliet Haslam – from the Adelaide Club initiated Minkey – a derivative of Mini Hockey – in the late 1970s and the program has continued to thrive. It is the largest club-based program in SA.
Every Friday afternoon more than 300 primary school kids – boys and girls – would descend on the South Parklands. Marlene organised schools’ participation, umpires, lining the pitches, setting up goals, and structuring games.
It was to have a huge impact on junior hockey and the sport’s growth in SA, introducing and developing many future State players.
The competition has modified rules and students supply their own hockey stick, shin pad and mouth guard.
Minkey also provides an opportunity for bourgeoning umpires to learn in a safe environment and be mentored by experienced umpires.
After 19 years or establishing and growing Minkey Hockey, Marlene Haslam stepped down from its operations but, given its sound foundation, the program continues to flourish today.
