Judy Daly loved the loneliness and challenge of the distance and cross-country runner and sought to inspire that same love through her coaching.

Did You Know

Judy Daly held a Level 4 Certificate of Coaching aimed at coaching High Performance athletes – but she chose to coach both grassroots and elite runners.

Judy Daly nee Tapfield was one of SA’s most enduring distance and cross-country runners. Her light build was perfect for the distance events.

Originally coached by her partner John Daly, Judy Daly herself became a popular and successful coach of a large group of SA runners.

She held a Level 4 coaching accreditation and, armed with the knowledge and experience, hosted notable workshops for Athletics SA with a particular focus on female performance.

Her contribution as an athlete, coach, coach educator and mentor has left an enduring legacy in SA athletics and across the nation.

She understood the demands on, and preparation required by middle-and long-distance runners, adding warmth, a sense of fun, and deep knowledge to her leadership repertoire.

For example, in the one season, she mentored and coached Dylan Stenson to SA State title victories in the 400m, 800m and 1500m.

As a competitor, Judy Tapfield (who married John Daly – a Physical Education academic, personal coach and Australian team coach) took out South Australian state, national and international Masters championships.

She was a member of Adelaide Harriers.
