Bobby Milburn was employed by the ABC from 1948 until the 1960s, becoming the first female sports commentator in SA.

A keenly intelligent and irrepressible advocate for women athletes, Bobby Milburn was employed by the ABC to report on women’s sport in SA in 1948.

 

She broke new ground by being the first women’s sport commentator in SA. She remained in that role until the 1960s.

 

As a skillful, medium-pace bowler, Bobby Milburn also played cricket for SA and Australia in the 1930s and 40s. 

She was selected in the first SA team to play in the national competition in 1934, and one year later was chosen for the Australian team, retaining her national position until the late 1940s.

 

A decade later, she created an adapted form of cricket called Court Cricket as a way of creating interest among youngsters for the game.
