Renowned for her left-handed shooting style, ability to dodge opponents within tight spaces, and high percentage finishing, made Burton a difficult match-up for defenders.
Noted for her strength at goal attack, Burton (nee Hayes) excelled at club, state and international levels.
She was a popular team member, enjoying a repartee with teammates, possessing a dry humour, and an easy smile.
Those qualities added to an enjoyable team culture.
She was part of two Australian gold medal winning Netball World Cup teams in 1975, where she made her international debut, and again in 1979.
Burton was named vice-captain of the Australian team on its 1978 tour of England that celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the sport in the country.
