In an outstanding recognition of her playing skills and leadership, in 2011 Lyn Davey was selected in Netball South Australia’s Team of the Century.
Possessed of a fun-loving, personable and gentle demeanour off the court, Lyn Davey (nee Moroney) had a fiercely competitive instinct when it came to a netball court.
Some call it white line fever.
It is what made her a fine selection as captain of Australia’s team for the IFN 1967 Netball World Cup played in Perth, the first time the tournament was played down under.
Captaincy of Australia is a title and honour bestowed on very few.
Lyn related well with her teammates, was encouraging, and her personal drive and unfaltering preparation and focus were an inspiring example to the group.
NZ defeated Australia in that tournament, with South Africa third.
Davey was first named in an Australian tournament team after the 1963 national championships and was part of the side that toured New Zealand in 1966 for a series of practice matches.
While she was a close-checking goalkeeper – and tall for her era – in the 1967 world championships Davey played at wing defence.
Following her playing career, Davey remained involved as a coach, selector, manager, and administrator in South Australia for many years.
She was a successful and popular manager of the SA Senior State team for several years.
She is a life member of the Garville Netball Club.
