Given the degree of difficulty of hockey, it’s reasonable to assume a certain versatility in its athletes that would cross over into other sports at an elite level.
That is the case with Georgie Parker who was signed to play AFLW by the famous Collingwood Football Club in 2018. Even when playing hockey, the team would warmup for training with footballs.
When she was delisted, she progressed to become co-host of an AFL football analysis show on Channel Seven called Armchair Experts.
Her ease in front of the TV cameras, despite being one of very few females in football media at the time, was supported by her double degree in Journalism and Public Relations.
But it was Parker’s dynamic skills with a hockey stick that captured the attention of the Hockeyroos’ selectors when the SA Suns defeated NSW 1-0 to capture the national championship in 2011.
She was the only goal scorer in that final.
In that same year, she was selected for the 2011 Australian Champions Trophy team. Numerous selections followed including victories in the Oceania Cup, Hockey Super Series 9s and 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Georgie Parker, the youngster from Berri in the Riverland, also played for Australia in the 1996 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in which the Hockeyroos reached the semi-finals.
She is yet another star to emerge from hockey’s powerful country regions. Together with Karri McMahon, the two grew up in the same hockey circles in the small town of Berri, and shared the 2016 Olympic Games experience.
