Led by Sport SA, The Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Centre for Women’s Sport was established to assist in the underrepresentation of women in sport as athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, volunteers and board members. It was identified that there was a need to close the “gap” and provide more opportunities for women to play sport and lead.
The Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Centre for Women’s Sport was identified as a priority for the Sport and Recreation industry and formed part of the state election platform in 2022. This priority was a result of feedback from sport industry surveys, Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) research, Game On state-wide consultation, the grants review and member engagement over the past three years.
The South Australian Government is a strong support of the Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Centre for Women’s Sport. They commit to working collaboratively led by the Women in Sport Taskforce in a state-wide approach to develop the centre and advance gender equity in sport and recreation in South Australia.
The Program is available for women working or volunteering in the South Australian sport industry. Applicants for the Program will require written confirmation from a state sporting organisation, association, or club that they are eligible for the Program.
To position South Australia as a national leader in women’s sport; supporting and empowering female athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, volunteers and board members to play, lead and change the game for future generations.
The values that underpin the commitment to working collaboratively and advancing gender equality in sport in South Australia are as follows:
